Kodu Game Lab- http://fuse.microsoft.com/projects/kodu
Kodu is a free programming application from Microsoft. Anyone can use it. However, it is
geared toward kids. This program can be used to teach kids programming by having them
create inventive games. These games can be played via computer or Xbox. The system is
downloaded onto your computer and receives updates via the Internet. After that, you're in
the driver's seat. You can then begin to create your own worlds, game themes, and
strategies. The game programming process is very intuitive; however, the application comes
with a set of helpful tutorials and lessons.
GameMaker Studio-- http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/studio
GameMaker is a free program that teaches how to create your own online video game. After
you download the program, you are off and running. This program is not for younger
children, and I would recommend it for older kids (13 and up). It is a detailed oriented game
engine, so it can definitely keep the game maker fully engaged and creative over long
periods of time.
Roblox-- www.roblox.com
Do you like 3D? Then Roblox is four you. Join the Roblox community; create, share, and
discuss the worlds you create using Roblox Studio. Children and adults alike truly enjoy this
free and robust game making and playing system.
Panda 3D-- www.panda3d.org
Panda 3D is another free game engine that has been constructed for the use of kids. It too
has an online community, and the games created can be used commercially (yes, you can
make money from them). This program includes tutorials and sample games for the users.
Gamestar Mechanic-- www.gamestarmechanic.com
Gamestar Mechanic is a wonderful game engine and gaming community for kids, especially
younger children. The games are easy to construct, and the game makers must play and win
their Quest games in order to earn the permission needed to publish and share their original
games online with other Gamestar Mechanic member. This program does not need to be
downloaded to your own computer; it is strictly online. It is an open source/free program
and is recommended by many educational organizations for its affordability and educational
benefits.
Scratch-- http://scratch.mit.edu/
Scratch, which was created by MIT, is a free online game programming engine that is
appropriate for younger and older children. The program does require a download to your
computer. However, the programming process is well-organized, and the tutorials are of
good quality.
Unity-- http://unity3d.com/
Unity is a very powerful game engine that is appropriate for older children or for the more
advanced young gamer. This multiplatform program helps you to create very realistic looking
characters and actions.
